From Passion to Pastry: The Bread & Butter Project Graduate Opens Adele’s Bakery in Wetherill Park

Sep 16, 2025 | Bakery News

After months of planning and years of dreaming, Adele’s Bakery has officially opened its doors in Wetherill Park, marking a significant milestone for Tanya, former trainee at The Bread & Butter Project.

Originally from Iraq, Tanya grew up with a love for cake decorating and pastry making, passions she cultivated at home while studying hotel and restaurant management. Despite her qualifications, cultural and legal restrictions in Iraq prevented her from pursuing a career in hospitality. Baking remained a hobby, shared only with family and friends.

That all changed after Tanya arrived in Australia in 2016. Without knowing a word of English, she began the long process of rebuilding her life — and her career. In 2018, she joined The Bread & Butter Project, Australia’s first social enterprise bakery, which trains refugees for employment in the baking industry.

Tanya’s journey from trainee to business owner is one of determination and resilience. After completing her training, she gained experience in a range of bakeries and cafés — including Harris Farm in-store bakeries — honing her skills in cake making and learning the ropes of the industry.

Now, alongside her husband — a fellow Iraqi with seven years’ experience as a baker in Sweden — Tanya is fulfilling a shared dream. Adele’s Bakery will offer a range of traditional Iraqi breads, pastries, and cakes. It’s truly a family-run business, with Tanya’s mother assisting in the kitchen and her father managing the accounts.

“When I came to Australia, I couldn’t speak English and I only baked in private,” Tanya recalls. “Now, whatever I liked before in Iraq, I can make here.”

Since arriving, Tanya has not only become fluent in English but has also earned certifications in baking, cake making, and disability support. Her story is a powerful example of what can be achieved with the right opportunities, and a great deal of perseverance.

The Bread & Butter Project congratulates Tanya on this incredible achievement. If you’re in the Wetherill Park area, be sure to stop by Adele’s Bakery and show your support. It’s a dream come true – and a business that deserves every success.
