Ben and Samia on SBS
We were thrilled that SBS recently shared the story of Ben and Samia – a trainee and a graduate-turned-trainer working together at The Bread & Butter Project to create a better life.

December 2025 was Ben’s first Christmas in Australia, having recently arrived from Afghanistan via Indonesia, and while Ben is grateful to have found work soon after arriving in Sydney, the festive season is also a reminder of those he has left behind in Kabul. “My dream is one day to celebrate the festive season together with my family”.
Under Samia’s guidance, Ben has been learning how to bake sourdough and make fruit mince tarts. A new recipe he has mastered with ease. ‘I love working here, and although we work hard, we never feel tired because we support each other, like a big family”.
It is wonderful to witness the growth and development of our trainees, and the sharing of knowledge within our bakery. This generosity and care goes a long way towards helping newly arrived refugees feel welcome and hopeful as they begin their next chapter in a new country.
